Chair's Message

Welcome to the English Language Department

The English Language Department is one of the few departments at KFUPM that teaches every student who graduates from the University. That reach is a responsibility, and we take it seriously.

As an academic literacy department, our emphasis is not on language for its own sake but on what students can do with it: read a demanding text closely, judge the evidence in it, build an argument of their own, and present that argument clearly to an audience that matters. These are the habits that carry our graduates through their degrees and into their working lives, and they are what our courses are designed to develop.

Students who complete our courses should be able to:

• meet the reading, writing, and research demands of their other courses
• undertake postgraduate study with confidence
• enter the job market with a real competitive advantage

The Department's main office is in Building 17. Our faculty have offices in Building 17 and in Building 9, next door.
